Magnets for Hanging Art and Signs

Magnets can be used to hang artwork, signs, posters, pictures and photos in several ways. Depending on the surface and application, magnets can attach directly to steel or be paired with another magnet or steel mounting point. See our Hanging Art on a Wall article for examples and mounting ideas.

The best magnet depends on the weight of the artwork, the mounting surface and whether the installation needs to be permanent or removable. Countersunk magnets can be screwed into place, adhesive-backed magnets provide a mounting option without screws, and rubber-covered magnets provide additional grip and cushioning against the mounting surface.

Yes. Small neodymium magnets work well for lightweight items such as posters, prints and photos. Magnetic mounting also makes it easy to remove or replace the displayed item without permanently attaching the magnet directly to the artwork.

The required strength depends on the weight of the item, the number of magnets used, the mounting surface and the direction of the load. Hanging from a vertical surface can require more consideration than a direct pull because the magnet must resist sliding. See How Much Will a Magnet Hold? for more information about choosing an appropriate magnet.

Yes. One advantage of magnetic mounting is that artwork, signs, posters and photos can be removed, repositioned or replaced without taking apart the entire mounting system. This makes magnets especially useful for displays and signs that are changed regularly.
