Steel Cups and Washers for Magnets

Steel cups and washers provide a ferromagnetic surface for magnets to attract to. They can be fastened to walls, ceilings, cabinets, doors and other surfaces to create magnetic mounting points, latches, closures and hanging systems.

A steel washer provides a simple, flat surface for a magnet to attract to. A steel cup surrounds the sides of a compatible magnet and redirects some of the magnetic field toward the contact surface, which can increase the holding force when the magnet is properly positioned inside the cup as well as providing a mechanical stop for stopping sliding down walls when hanging from wall.

No. Steel cups and washers are not permanent magnets. They are made from ferromagnetic steel that is strongly attracted to a magnet and provides a surface for a magnet to attach to.

A properly sized steel cup can increase the holding force of a magnet against a steel surface by redirecting the magnetic field toward the working face. The amount of improvement depends on the magnet, cup dimensions, steel thickness and the application.

Choose a steel cup or washer based on the size of the magnet, the desired mounting arrangement and the screw size being used. Our steel cups and washers are available in several sizes for common #4, #6, #8 and #10 screws.
