Horseshoe Magnet General Information

Below are some common questions about horseshoe magnets and how they work.

What is a horseshoe magnet?

A horseshoe magnet is a permanent magnet formed into a U-shape, with the north and south magnetic poles located at the two ends. Bringing the poles close together creates a strong magnetic field in the space between them.

Why are horseshoe magnets shaped like a horseshoe?

The horseshoe shape places the north and south poles close together, concentrating the magnetic field between the ends of the magnet. This makes both poles easily accessible at the same time. Learn more in our Why are Magnets Shaped like Horseshoes? article.

What are horseshoe magnets used for?

Horseshoe magnets are commonly used for magnetic demonstrations, science experiments, educational activities, picking up ferromagnetic objects, and applications where access to both magnetic poles is useful.

What is the keeper on a horseshoe magnet?

A keeper is a piece of ferromagnetic material placed across the north and south poles of a horseshoe magnet when it is not in use. It provides a low-reluctance path between the poles and helps preserve the magnet's strength during storage.

What is the difference between Alnico and neodymium magnets?

Alnico and neodymium are different permanent magnet materials. Neodymium magnets generally provide much greater magnetic strength for their size, while Alnico magnets have excellent temperature stability and are commonly used in traditional horseshoe magnet designs, sensors, instruments, and educational demonstrations.
