SWP-S Specifications

  • Magnetization Direction: The direction through which the magnet is magnetized. See our Magnetization Directions page for more details.
Magnetization direction icon North and south pair (outer face)
  • Size: Size is the physical dimensions of the product using the standard unit of measure inches.
    0.5 x 0.075 Inch ( Diameter x Thickness )
  • Metric Size: Metric size is the physical dimensions of the product in metric millimeters.
    12.7 x 1.91 mm ( Diameter x Thickness )
  • Pull Force 1: Pull force case 1 represents a magnet attracting to a thick steel plate. Learn more about Magnet Pull Force Case 1.
    3 lb (1.36 kg)
  • Grade:
    N38
  • Max Operating Temp: Maximum operating temperature, also known as maximum service temperature, is the temperature at which the magnet may be exposed to continuously with no significant long-range instability or structural changes. Learn more in our Temperature and Neodymium Magnets article.
    176°F (80°C)
  • Material: This lists the name of the material each product is composed of.
    Neodymium (NdFeb)
  • BH Max: BH max is the Maximum Energy Product at the point on the B/H Curve that has the most strength, expressed in MGOe (MegaGaussOersteds). When describing the grade of a neodymium magnet, this number is commonly referred to as the "N" number, as in Grade N52 magnets. Learn more about Bh max in our glossary.
    38 MGOe
  • Tolerances: Dimensional tolerance specifies the allowed leeway for variations in manufacturing.
    ±0.004 in (.1mm)
  • Coating: Most neodymium magnets are plated or coated in order to protect the magnet material from corrosion. Check out our Custom Magnets for unplated magnets and other coatings not stocked for this size magnet. Learn more about all available platings and coating in our What Magnet Coating Should I Use? article.
    Nickel-Copper-Nickel (Ni-Cu-Ni)
  • Weight: This is the weight of a single magnet in ounces and grams. Variety packs (with mixed sizes) show the overall weight.
    0.1686 oz (4.78 g)
  • Br Max: Br max is also called "Residual Flux Density" and is when the magnetic induction remaining in a saturated magnetic material after the magnetizing field has been removed. This is the point at which the hysteresis loop crosses the B axis at zero magnetizing force, and represents the maximum flux output from the given magnet material. By definition, this point occurs at zero air gap, and therefore cannot be seen in practical use of magnet materials. Learn more about Br max in our glossary.
    12,600 Gauss
  • Pack Size: The number of products included in quantity 1 when added to cart. A pair means 2 products and a pack is a group of multiple products. Some products have multiple pairs in a single pack. Please be careful when placing into cart.
    1 Pair
  • Color: The color of the coating or plating on the product.
    Silver
  • Cover Material:
    Polyethylene Vinyl Acetate (PEVA)

Product Description

The swp-s plastic cased sewing magnet has a 1/2" diameter and 0.075" thickness and come together in a north south pair. Each sewing magnet inside of the waterproof plastic sheath (PEVA) is in a stainless steel cup, one with the north pole and the other with the south pole facing outward to form a strong attraction through clothing, bags and other fabric and materials for invisible closures. These sewing magnets have a high size to strength ratio and can handle max operating temperatures up to 176°F (80°C).

The swp-s sewing magnet is designed for creating hidden magnetic closures in fabric, clothing, bags, pouches, cases, and other sewn products. The magnet can be concealed between layers of material, providing a clean, low-profile closure without visible snaps, buttons, zippers, or other mechanical fasteners. It is a versatile choice for designers, makers, crafters, tailors, and manufacturers creating handbags, wallets, garments, costumes, fabric covers, accessories, and custom textile products. When selecting a sewing magnet, consider the total thickness of all material layers between the two magnets, since magnetic holding force decreases as the distance between them increases. A pull force between 1 and 3 lb is a useful target for many fabric closures, although the ideal strength depends on the application. The swp-s works well with a total material thickness of approximately 0.01" to 1/16". The table below shows the expected pull force through several materials, assuming the magnets are separated by two layers of fabric.

Material Fabric thickness, single layer [in] Pull Force [lb] Comments
Cotton T-shirt 0.012 1.90 Good pull
Denim/jeans 0.028 0.87 Light pull
Canvas 0.04 0.52 Light pull
Leather, 1/16" thick 0.0625 0.22 Gentle pull
Leather, 1/8" thick 0.125 0.03 Weak pull
