Plastic Coated Magnet General Information

Below are some common questions we get regarding rubber coated magnets.

What is a plastic magnet?

A plastic-coated magnet is simply a magnet with a coating made of plastic. Our plastic is a layer over the nickel-copper-nickel plating on the neodymium magnet. The coating provides good weather and corrosion resistance, but also provides more shock or impact resistance and is less likely to scratch or mar the surface it is attached to.

Is the magnet plastic coating waterproof?

Yes, the magnet's plastic coating protects it from water and moisture and prevents leaching into water. This makes plastic coated neodymium magnets the best option for using outdoors, in moist environments or underwater. They are the best reef safe magnets and often used to hang coral, rocks and other objects in a fish tank aquarium without harming fish.

Can I glue to the plastic coating?

Yes, you can glue to the plastic covering. Plastic magnets may have a better bond strength than a nickel finish. Bond strength will vary per material so be sure to check product label and test. Learn more in our Gluing Magnets article.
